Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Wednesday that Donald Trump’s latest comments about President Vladimir Putin were unacceptable and “unfair.”
“He needs to clarify and correct his statements.
There is no doubt he has made some very offensive comments,” Kaine said.
“He needs more information and more clarity and clarity on what he meant by his comments.”
The former vice president, who served in the Senate from 2005 to 2019, said Trump’s words were “unacceptable.”
“I think there’s a responsibility to make clear to him that his remarks are not only offensive, they are indefensible,” Kaine told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.
He also called on Trump to “make clear to the Russian leader that what he said is not only unacceptable but is not a part of American foreign policy.”
Kaine added that the comments “have put the United States in a very bad position politically, and there is a responsibility on the part of our president and our vice president to make sure we’re not playing politics with Russia.”
Kerry is a close ally of Trump who has been critical of the president’s response to the Russia probe.
The vice president is a former presidential candidate who is now running for governor in Virginia.
